“I assure you the honor is all mine, councilman Featherstone. Again I must thank you all for allowing me the privilege to sit in on such a crucial discussion.” Smooth words from a man well-versed in the art of conversation (especially with high-ego individuals). He casually took his seat at the long table with a white tablecloth such that it might have appeared they were about to have an early dinner. A warm glance around him indentified all the big players in the Earth Government. As the seats filled, it became apparent that the gentlemen sitting in this room combined had such control over this planet it was almost sickening. And as diverse as the nations and cultures of Earth are-
“Since when did the CEO of a weapons monopoly get clearance for a maximum security meeting?! Why wasn’t I made aware of this?” The yelling came a few seats down from a man who had a natural hatred for Matthieu Avelin, Councilman Drescher. It is said that regardless of how loved a man may be there will always be someone who will despise him. This short and mustachioed German was such a man. Luckily Matthieu had already prepared himself for such an attack, and had a dozen safeguards in place. Safeguards number two and five rose to his defense first. Featherstone was an older man and friend of the chief executive’s father. Councilman Chen owed Matthieu more than a couple of favors as Avelin Dynamics chooses to cooperate with several resource companies Chen happens to be heavily invested in. That and Matthieu was in good relations with his oldest daughter, Rose.
After a brief debate and a few harsh reminders of the purpose of this meeting the head councilman spoke, and his voice silenced the crowd in an instant. “You will find, councilman Drescher, that Avelin has a mind as sharp as his words are sweet. But it is his unyielding desire for success and his ability to achieve it that has brought him here to this table. Which is why I, Head Councilman Charles Henry Rochester the Third appoint you to the temporary position of acting councilmember in place of councilman Wensley, who is currently unable to fulfill his duties due to sickness.”
Matthieu only gave a nod as if to give his consent to the decision. The council then went underway-that is until a large holographic panel appeared in the center of the table. It would seem-Matthieu mused-that this day would prove far more interesting than he had anticipated.
