Rowe Masterson sat in his captain’s chair, his head resting on his fist, a bored look on his face. He gazed ahead of him, the sailor at the wheel slowly making the necessary adjustments to the bank of instruments ahead of him. Beyond him was a large window that showed the immense expanse of the sky, clear and blue as always. “Enemy to the port side, 60 degrees north” boomed a voice from one of the many tubes that ran around the bridge of the ship. “Raise ship twenty degrees, bring us hard to port and tell all hands to get to battle stations” commanded Rowe. The massive air ship began its ascent as the enemy ship could be seen in the distance. Two small tufts of white smoke emerged from the from of the ship and the Silvana rocked slightly. “They were firing their first shots to gauge the distance” reflected Rowe. “Tell forward guns to fire at a 35 degree angle northwards and to load the armor piercing rounds” thought Rowe. Looking out of the window Rowe saw the massive forward guns rise up and fire their payload. As the two ships began to close Rowe could see that the initial shots had missed their mark. “Tell aft gunners to prepare to fire broadside when the enemy ship comes into view” ordered Rowe. The ships came side to side and Rowe examined his enemy. His bored expression changed to alertness as he noticed the smallest detail. “Dive down immediately” commanded Rowe. The Silvana made a sharp descent right as the enemy ship unleashed a long chain saw like weapon from the side of the ship. The chainsaw extended off of the side of the ship and whirred loudly as it passed over the top of the Silvana. “Sir what are your orders” asked the first mate, standing beside the captain’s chair. “Descend into the cloud cover and wait for them to pass over” ordered Rowe. The Silvana sat crouched in the clouds, running silently as the enemy ship passed overhead. “Ascend even with the ship, increase engine output to ninety percent, open mast ports and prepare to fire Shrapnel Cannon” boomed Rowe’s voice, the captain standing up. The Silvana ascended swiftly as the front of the ship opened up to reveal six large barrels, two side by side in a stack of three. “Fire Shrapnel cannon” screamed Rowe. The six barrels opened up and the ship rocked backwards as the large force exited the Silvana. The enemy ship was engulfed in smoke as the shells connected at almost point blank range. After a short while Rowe watched as the enemy ship began it slow cascade downwards, smoke pouring from it. It was a slightly majestic thing to watch, a ship going down, the massive beast falling from the graces of the sky towards the earth below. It was almost as if it had lost its favor in the sky and was now being reclaimed by the ground below. “Man was not meant to enjoy the beauty of the sky forever” thought Rowe, sitting back in his captain’s chair. “Sir we have been asked to return to the headquarters in order to be debriefed upon our mission” murmured his first mate into his ear. “Make course for EEA headquarters” said Rowe. The Silvana turned to the west and began to make its journey back to the headquarters of the EAA, the captain’s face returning to a look of boredom.
